History

We began as a small but convenient “side service” provided by the USC Bookstore’s Textbooks Department in the mid 1980s. As the demand for course readers increased, the service assumed a more streamlined and formalized structure. Textbook employees were first assigned on a part-time basis and eventually on a full-time basis to the specific task of assembling 15 to 20 course readers submitted by faculty each semester.

Since those early days, the custom publishing industry has experienced steady growth across the country as more faculty members embraced course readers as supplements or alternatives to textbooks for their courses. USC Trojan Bookstore Custom Publishing has experienced the same growth in volume and size. Though the initial focus was on serving faculty at the USC campus, external requests gradually allowed the department to offer the same quality service to other institutions, first in California, and then around the country. In 1995, due to the expanding list of schools being served, the custom publishing department was formally established as UNIVERSITY CUSTOM PUBLISHING, a division of the USC Trojan Bookstores.
